From The President
Since the Sept. News letter we held our first full
membership meeting with the new slate of officers. A speaker was very informative
and everyone learned a great deal about the Shriners Hospital for Children.
The attendance was good and they were very interested in what the speaker
brought to them as many questions were asked. It is always a pleasure to
hear an informative speaker and to have audience participation when the
speaker opens to such questions from the floor.
It Pays To Wait
As your President and Association Member I have
been working with the Conservation Department for a whole year. Our goal
was to improve the Conservation Area between Mallow Hill Road and Sara
Lynn Street.
The Commission first installed two signs to prevent people
from dumping trash and debris in the area. Second, to have the city clean
up the area and mow the high grass that blocked drivers view at the intersection.
Finally it is done and it looks much better. We now ask you and anyone
you know to help keep it cleaned up.
SSWAMP
Have you heard of ‘SSWAMP’ ? No?
It stands for : “Springfield Surface Water Action Monitoring
Partnership Survey”
This program was started some time ago by the Springfield
Planning Department. Ten (10) ponds in Springfield were monitored this
past summer.
The Lakes or Ponds on this years list are: Mona Lake,
Long Pond, Loon Pond, Dimmock Pond, Van Horne Reservoir, Bass Pond, Mill
Pond & Watershops Pond.
Volunteers from each pond/lake take samples each month
and perform analyses immediately. Other samples they are sent to U of M
for analyses.
In addition some volunteers collect rainwater run off
during rainstorms to help determine what might be draining from your property
into the ponds.
Your 2nd Vice President has been taking water samples
from Mill Pond and a neighbor has been collecting rainwater samples. (More
on this topic in future issues)
