NOV. GUEST SPEAKER

Katherine Pederson of the Springfield Water and Sewer Commission will speak at our November 20th meeting. The topic will be improving the quality of water in our lakes and rivers.

WELCOME

The Association extends a welcome to Sgt. James Rosso, the new community police commanding officer of Sectors G & I.  We also wish good luck to Sgt. Curtis McKenzie for his new appointment to the Criminal Intelligence Bureau.

THANKSGIVING FOOD DRIVE

The Sixteen Acres Civic Association will hold its 6th annual Thanksgiving Food Drive at Waldbaum’s Foodmart on Cooley Street.  It will take place on Saturday November 10th from 10am to 4pm.  The event will benefit the Open Pantry’s Emergency Food Pantry.  As in the past, the event is geared for children.  There will be Shriner’s clowns, the Springfield Mounted police, an officer from DARE program, face painting and free gifts for every child.  There will also be a free raffle for adults who donate cash or food products.  The gifts are donated by local businesses.  The corporate offices of the Eastfield Mall again donated gifts for all the children.

CONGRATULATIONS

Rudy Ruggeri’s daughter, Diane Surprenant, and grandson, Andrew, are to be congratulated for making handmade heart shaped pins decorated in patriotic colors that

were sold to benefit survivors of the WTC disaster.  Over $600.00 was raised from the sale of the pins.

Congratulations to Pioneer Valley Montessori School at 1524 Parker Street for receiving a 10 year reaccredidation from the Association of Independent Schools in New England.  The school allows us to print our newsletter on their equipment and they also supply the paper.

Gail Supanich, director of the school, was recently nominated and elected as a board member of the Open Pantry Community Services, Inc.  Gail is the wife of Richard Greenberg, vice president, of the association.

A proclamation naming October 22, 2001 as “Fun Time Nursery School Day” was presented to owner Judy Fluery.  She has been educating young minds for 25 yeas.  Judy is a past secretary of the association. Her business is located in the Allen Street Mall.

MAYORAL FORUM

Our mayoral candidates’ forum, held Oct.16th at Kiley Middle School, was a huge success.  Over 400 were in attendance to hear Mayor Michael J. Albano and State Representative Paul E. Caron answer questions submitted by members of the audience and the two panelists, Ray Herchel from WGGB Channel 40 and Steve O’Neil, owner and editor of the Springfield Journal.  Senator Brian Lees moderated.  Amanda, daughter of Ruth Moorhouse, our Secretary, sang a beautiful rendition of our national anthem.  Tony Bonito who is owner of The Music Men store on Boston Road donated the sound equipment.

CONDOLENCES

Our deepest sympathy goes out to Marshal and Sandy Moriartry on the passing of his beloved mother, Josephine E. Harkin.
