NOMINATIONS NEEDED

MAY MEETING

The guest speaker at the Tuesday, May 21st Association meeting will be Andy Orazio, Director of the Scantic Valley YMCA.  The meeting will be held at 7:00 pm in the Church in the Acres on Wilbraham Road.  Literature and information about fees and programs being offered at Camp Wilder in Sixteen Acres will be available.

We ask that all those attending bring a donation of a non-perishable food item for the Open Pantry.  Protein foods are in short supply and needed.

SPRING CLEANUP

We wish to give a big THANK YOU to all who volunteered their time and energy cleaning the traffic islands at 16 Acres Center.  Several members and students from WNEC’S Criminal Justice Association gave up a Saturday Morning to help with the annual cleanup.

ELECTIONS

Nominations for the 2002-2003 fiscal year will be on May 21, 2002 at the monthly membership meeting.  All Officers and Directors will be elected at the June 18th meeting.  This is your opportunity to nominate either yourself or a person of your choice.  The offices available include President, Vice President, Asst. to the Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer and nine Board of Directors.

SCHOOLS

At the last Board of Directors meeting there was a discussion about the Springfield School System’s poor showing on MCAS tests.  The latest release shows that we remain at, or near, last place for the entire State.  This impacts our property values and our attractiveness to middle class families with children.

Springfield schools are also struggling with truancy and safety issues.  The Board has no easy answers to the problems; issues to be considered include vouchers, neighborhood schools, expanded Charter schools and expanded school choice programs with surrounding suburbs.

As a first step, it was the consensus of the Board that we form a committee to meet with, monitor, and offer the 16 Acres neighborhood’s support to the school department in improving the Springfield schools.  Anyone interested in serving on such a committee should come to the May meeting to hear further discussion on the subject.

SUMMER MEETINGS

A motion was made and passed at the April meeting to suspend the July and August monthly meetings.  There will still be a newsletter to keep members informed about activities in 16 Acres during the summer months.

ANNUAL PICNIC

The 16 Acres and Outer Belt Civic Associations will hold another annual picnic at Camp Wilder on Saturday, August 18th.  Last years picnic was so successful that the Association agreed to give our members the opportunity to enjoy another day of delicious food and visiting with their friends.  There will be additional information in upcoming newsletter.
